The wonders of science were explored by just over 2500 people of all ages, at the inaugural IT Tralee Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths (STEM) showcase on Saturday the 19^th of November held at the ITT North Campus.

The family centred event held a variety of workshops for children on topics such as robotics, rockets and the science behind bubbles. There was plenty to do for those not taking part in the fun workshops with the Fanzini Brothers circus performing, face painting and bouncy castles all making it a fun-filled family day. 

The showcase also hosted the first ever all-girls Hackathon event, where female transition year students were taught how to code creatively, promoting careers in the digital technology sector. This event was facilitated by IT Tralee in partnership with DCU, Girls Hack Ireland and Microsoft.

One of the highlights of the day focused on industry panel discussions, whereby companies involved in the areas of agriculture and manufacturing engineering and the ICT sector outlined the many career prospects in these sectors. This interactive session was facilitated by broadcaster and lecturer by Dr. Aoibhinn Ní Shúilleabháin. Companies who participated in this event included: Liebherr, Dairymaster, BorgWarner, Southern Scientific, Aspen Grove Solutions, JRI America, the National Space Centre and FEXCO.

Kerry based STEM businesses were also given the opportunity to encourage young people into the industry, by exhibiting and demonstrating how their organisations contribute to the STEM sector. The demonstrations highlighted the diverse range career options that exist in Kerry and the region, inspiring and motivating the next generation of innovators and creators.

Brid Mc Elligott, Vice President for Research and Development at the IT Tralee expressed her thanks to Science Foundation Ireland (SFI) for their generous support for the festival, which along with contributions from the IT Tralee, Kerry County Council and JRI America ensured that a fun-filled, educational and enjoyable day was had by all in attendance.
